Cultural Mobility and Connection

This landmark study explores how artists and cultural professionals connect and collaborate across these islands. The research set out to understand the realities of mobility today and the opportunities that could strengthen future cultural relationships.

Cultural Mobility and Connection: Ireland and the four nations of the UK cover.

Commissioned by the British Council, our work combined extensive desk research with multi-layered interviews and an open survey that gathered insights from 278 practitioners, producers, policymakers and cultural organisations. These conversations revealed both the richness of existing cross-border activity and the challenges faced by those working between Ireland and the four nations of the UK.

We explored the policy frameworks, funding routes and partnerships that shape cultural exchange, while also listening closely to the lived experiences of artists navigating networks, touring routes, resources and access. The project examined the shared histories and complexities that underpin this unique cultural relationship.

Guided by the ambition of Dr Kerry McCall Magan, this work was shaped by generous contributions from Arts Council Ireland, Arts Council Northern Ireland, Culture Ireland, Creative Ireland, Creative Scotland, Wales Arts International and the many cultural professionals who shared their time and insight. Their perspectives offer a compelling picture of the creative energy, resilience and appetite for collaboration that defines cultural life across these islands.

Cultural Mobility and Connection provides practical pathways to support and champion future cooperation across Ireland and the four nations of the UK.
